What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a major contributor to the buildup of plaque (atherosclerosis) in arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases.

⚠️ Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in Australia, making blood pressure management a critical part of your overall health.

What Is Considered Healthy Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure naturally fluctuates, so occasional changes are normal. However, it’s helpful to know the general ranges:

Healthy: Around 120/80 mmHg

⚠️ Elevated: Over 140/90 mmHg

Just one reading outside this range does not mean you have hypertension—and even if you do, you may still have normal readings at times.

What Are the Symptoms of High Blood Pressure?

One of the most concerning things about hypertension is that it often has no symptoms.

Many people are unaware they have high blood pressure until it is detected during a routine check-up.

Because you can feel fine and still have hypertension, it’s essential to monitor your blood pressure regularly with your doctor.

Do I Need Medication for Hypertension?

Not always.

While some individuals need medication to manage high blood pressure, many people can avoid or delay medication by making lifestyle changes.

Your doctor will assess your full risk profile—including family history, cholesterol levels, and age—before recommending medication.

How Is Blood Pressure Monitored?

To understand what your blood pressure is really doing, we look at how often it stays in the abnormal range. This can be tracked through:

  • Regular visits with your doctor

  • Home blood pressure monitors

  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, if needed

Home monitoring is a great tool, especially when paired with a smartphone app to track trends. However, these devices may not be as accurate as the professional-grade equipment used in our clinic. That’s why it’s essential to work closely with your GP.

How to Lower High Blood Pressure Naturally?

Here are the most effective steps you can take to lower your cholesterol:
